How to choose an electrician (and 3 things you should ask when you do)

Choosing a tradie can be hard, often we find ourselves resorting to Facebook groups seeking reviews ore referrals from strangers online. The problem is that even if you do get honest reviews, a lot of the time you are getting them from friends of the tradie vouching for them. Which is great in alot of cases, but for every great referral there is a horror story waiting to be told.

So how can you be sure you are getting the right sparky for the job?

When it comes to deciding who is right for the job one of the first things you should be looking for is licences (and insurance). With the rise of sites like fiver and other skill sharing networks there isnt alot of stops and checks in place to ensure that the person standing in your home telling you they are lienced – really are.

So our first word of advice is to simply ask to see their licences and insurance information. If they can’t provide it, look elseware. Unlicenced electrical work is extremely dangerous and can be the cause of life threatening events for you and your family (never mind voiding your insurance completely).

Once you have identified that your electrician is qualified, licenced and insured its time to consider how they run their business. Are they so big that your custom and repeat business doesn’t really matter to them? There are plenty of providers just like this who are happy to up the fees to make it worth their while for jobs that should cost half what they quote. Maybe they are a one-man show whose fee is so low they can’t really afford the time to do what they need to do properly? Cheaper isn’t always better and you don’t always get what you pay for.

A quick way to work out where they sit is to ask for a quote, how does it compare against your others? Where they quick to turn it around? Does their customer service point to great electrical services? How are you left feeling after your quote? Did they follow you up? Customer service and admin processes are often great indicators of the health of their business and where you sit inside it.

So your sparky has their ducks in a row and their admin is on point, you are feeling great about them and you are pretty sure you want to engage them, what else can you do to be sure that you are making the right choice? Ask to see their reviews!

Great feedback is amazing and very reassuring, what’s more assuring is that people are 21% more likely to leave a review after a negative experience than a positive one. So if your sparky has a pile of positive reviews that’s a great place to start. But don’t discount the negative reviews. There is often gold in the way companies and small businesses address their negative reviews too, did the acknowledge or explain the issue? Did they try to resolve it? Did they reply? Look for signs of good business even in the negative reviews because that’s where you will see the best of a business (and the worst).

With all that in mind facebook referrals are great and do certainly serve their purpose just be sure to do a little extra digging to be sure you and your home, office and family are not left in a sticky situation when it comes to your electricity.
